Canada to Lead G7 in 2025: A New Era of Global Leadership
OTTAWA, January 3, 2025 – Canada is set to take over the presidency of the Group of Seven (G7) in 2025, leading a forum of seven of the world’s most advanced economies at a time of political instability at home and around the globe. The G7 includes the United States, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada, along with the European Union.
Canada will host the G7 leaders’ summit from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. The Canadian presidency will prioritize building economies that benefit everyone, fighting climate change, and managing rapidly evolving technologies. This will be Canada’s seventh time chairing the G7 since joining the group in 1976. Canada plans to launch a multi-year development project aimed at addressing global challenges.
The G7 presidency provides Canada with a unique opportunity to influence global policies and address pressing international issues. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pledged to use this platform to advance Canada’s domestic and international priorities, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among the world’s leading economies.
Industry leaders and experts have expressed optimism about Canada’s role in the G7, highlighting the potential for meaningful discussions and impactful outcomes. Sen. Peter Boehm, a former diplomat, stated, “Our participation in the G7 is potentially the jewel of the crown of our foreign policy.”
As Canada prepares to take the helm of the G7, the world watches with anticipation to see how the country will navigate the complex landscape of global challenges and opportunities.
However, with a possible federal election looming this year, there are questions about how Canada’s priorities might shift depending on the outcome. A change in government could bring new policies and approaches to the G7 presidency, potentially altering the focus areas and initiatives that Canada will champion on the global stage.
