CHISINAU / KYIV – August 17, 2026 – A Russian Banderol (S-8000) munition crossed from Ukraine’s Odesa region into Moldova during a Russian attack on Ukraine on Monday evening and exploded on Moldovan territory, Ukrainian and Moldovan authorities reported.
The Ukrainian Air Force said a Banderol-type jet-powered loitering munition or light cruise missile crossed Ukraine’s state border from the Odesa region toward Moldova. Moldovan military systems detected an unidentified aerial object entering the country’s airspace around 17:37 local time on a route near Cuciurgan–Tiraspol, close to the Transnistria area. The object disappeared from radar near the village of Tălmaza (Talmaza) in Ștefan Vodă district in southeastern Moldova.
An explosion occurred approximately three kilometres from the village, igniting dry vegetation. Emergency services extinguished the fire, cordoned off the area, and deployed specialists to examine the wreckage. No casualties were reported. Moldova temporarily closed part of its central airspace for about 15 minutes as a precaution.
The Moldovan Foreign Ministry condemned the airspace violation as a serious breach of sovereignty and a direct threat to public safety, stating that Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to affect Moldova’s security.
The Banderol is a compact Russian system developed by the sanctioned company Kronstadt. It is often described as a hybrid between a light cruise missile and a jet-powered loitering munition, equipped with a jet engine and a high-explosive warhead. Ukrainian sources link the object that crossed the border with the explosion near Tălmaza; Moldovan officials initially described it as unidentified pending examination of the debris.
The incident fits a recurring pattern of Russian drones and munitions occasionally straying into or crashing in Moldova (and neighbouring Romania) as spillover from strikes on southern Ukraine. Moldova has repeatedly condemned such violations.
