Calgary/Ottawa – August 2, 2026 – WestJet flight attendants represented by CUPE Local 8125 are on strike after last-minute talks failed, grounding most of the airline’s jet operations during the busy August long weekend.
About 4,400 cabin crew walked off the job. The dispute centres on pay for ground duties such as boarding, safety checks, and managing delays. CUPE Local 8125 President Alia Hussain stated: “We tried until the very last minute to get a fair deal that recognizes the value of the work cabin crews do. WestJet’s offer did not go far enough.”
WestJet has suspended most bookings until at least August 5, with Encore regional flights still operating. Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu said: “A strike or lockout does not mean an agreement can’t be reached, the expectation is that parties can and should come to an agreement at the bargaining table.”
The disruption is being felt across the country, including by travellers connecting through major hubs or flying into Northwestern Ontario communities. Passengers with bookings between July 30 and August 4 can make free changes or cancellations. Under Air Passenger Protection Regulations, affected guests are entitled to rebooking options, refunds, and potential compensation for longer delays.
Travellers are advised to check WestJet’s website regularly for the latest status.
