OTTAWA – August 15, 2026 – Canada is heading into a critical week of trade negotiations with the United States, with a new round of 50 per cent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods scheduled to take effect on August 19.
Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Canadian negotiators remain engaged with their U.S. counterparts. Sources familiar with the talks have described progress as ongoing but have not confirmed whether a deal or significant exemptions will be reached before the deadline.
Unlike earlier tariff measures, the forthcoming levies would apply even to goods that comply with the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement. Business groups and provincial governments have warned of potential job losses and supply-chain disruption if the tariffs proceed without relief.
Quebec officials have specifically urged Ottawa to protect supply-managed agricultural sectors. Some Canadian firms are reportedly preparing contingency plans while hoping the deadline produces a negotiated outcome.
