KYIV – August 17, 2026 – Strikes by both Russian and Ukrainian forces killed at least 16 people over the weekend, according to officials on both sides, as long-range attacks and frontline combat continued at a high tempo.
Russian drones and missiles struck multiple Ukrainian regions, including Kryvyi Rih, where attacks on a major steel plant and other sites caused deaths and injuries. Ukrainian air defences intercepted the majority of incoming drones in recent overnight attacks, though some strikes still caused damage and casualties.
Ukrainian forces meanwhile launched large drone waves against Russian territory, including the Moscow region and southern areas. Russian authorities reported intercepting hundreds of drones and confirmed civilian deaths in several regions.
On the front line, Ukrainian forces reported 236 combat engagements on August 16, with particularly intense fighting in the Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka and Sloviansk sectors. Both sides continue to rely heavily on drones, guided bombs and artillery as the war grinds on with no diplomatic breakthrough in sight.
