NIZHNEKAMSK / KYIV – August 20, 2026 – Ukrainian long-range drones struck the TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, overnight, causing a fire at one of Russia’s largest and most modern refining complexes, according to Ukrainian and open-source reports.
The TANECO facility, owned by Tatneft, has a designed capacity of more than 16 million metric tonnes of crude oil per year and produces diesel, aviation fuel, gasoline and other petroleum products. Ukrainian defence company Fire Point confirmed that Ukrainian-made FP-1 drones were used in the attack, which took place roughly 1,200 kilometres from the front line.
Monitoring channels reported a fire at the production site and claimed preliminary information indicating up to 12 people may have been killed, with the possibility that foreign specialists were among the casualties. Russian local authorities said air defences had “successfully repelled” a massive attack and that several people were injured. Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev described the defence response as successful, while Ukrainian sources released footage showing drones reaching the industrial zone despite anti-aircraft fire.
The same night, Ukrainian drones also targeted the Taman-Nafta oil terminal in Krasnodar Krai and a 500 kV substation that forms part of the power link to occupied Crimea. Fires were reported at the energy facilities, and power disruptions affected parts of the peninsula.
The Nizhnekamsk strike continues Ukraine’s sustained campaign against Russian oil refining and export infrastructure. The goal, according to Ukrainian officials, is to reduce fuel supplies available for Russian military operations and to increase economic pressure on Moscow. TANECO is considered one of Russia’s more technologically advanced refineries, making the reported damage particularly significant.
Russian authorities have not released detailed official casualty or damage figures. The attack forms part of a broader overnight drone barrage that also hit other industrial and energy targets across multiple regions.
