THUNDER BAY / NORTHWEST REGION – August 30, 2026 – The wildfire situation across Northwestern Ontario continues to improve, though 59 active wildland fires remain in the region, according to the latest reports from provincial fire officials.
Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services said fire activity has weakened in recent days. The Ministry of Natural Resources has begun pulling back command posts from two major fire clusters as conditions ease.
The large Rinker Lake Complex, which includes Thunder Bay 36 and the Dryden fires, remains classified as not under control but has shown low fire behaviour. No major new evacuations have been reported, and many residents who left earlier in the summer have been able to return.
Officials continue to monitor weather and fuel conditions as the fire season stretches into late August.
