Zelensky Refuses to Lower Draft Age Amid Ongoing Conflict
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected calls to lower the draft age from 25 to 18, despite mounting pressure from Western allies. The decision comes as Ukraine continues to face significant manpower shortages in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
In a recent statement, Zelensky emphasized the importance of equipping and training existing brigades rather than relying on younger, less experienced soldiers. “We must not compensate the lack of equipment and training with the youth of soldiers,” Zelensky stated on social media. “The priority should be providing missiles and lowering Russia’s military potential, not Ukraine’s draft age”.
The United States and other Western allies have been urging Ukraine to lower its conscription age to address the growing need for troops. U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated this stance, offering to provide training and weapons to newly drafted soldiers if Ukraine changes its conscription policy.
Despite these pressures, Zelensky remains steadfast in his decision, arguing that the focus should be on preserving lives and ensuring that soldiers are adequately equipped and trained. “The goal should be to preserve as many lives as possible, not to preserve weapons in storage,” he added.
The debate over the draft age highlights the broader challenges Ukraine faces in its fight against Russia. While the country has made significant strides in modernizing its military, the ongoing conflict continues to strain its resources and personnel.
As the situation evolves, the international community watches closely, with many hoping for a resolution that balances the need for effective military strategy with the preservation of human life.
