KYIV / MOSCOW – September 21, 2026 – Ukraine launched more than 1,000 long-range drones at Russia over the weekend, including hundreds aimed at Moscow, on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary election.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he ordered the attack after Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities. Reports said at least two people were killed in the Moscow area and that the Moscow refinery caught fire. United Russia claimed a record victory in a tightly controlled vote that included occupied Ukrainian territory, which Kyiv and the European Commission called illegal.
Russia answered by hitting Zaporizhzhia, striking apartment blocks, a university and a shopping mall and wounding at least five people. Moscow said it targeted logistics hubs, warehouses and ports. Russian officials said they will “intensify” attacks on Kyiv.
Zelenskyy said he spoke with President Donald Trump and that the two agreed to meet in New York this week during the UN General Assembly. He called the peace track “our number-one priority” and thanked Trump for signing the Russia sanctions bill.
