BELLEVILLE / OTTAWA – September 21, 2026 – A police officer and a civilian were shot Sunday near a synagogue in Belleville, Ont., as the Jewish community marked Yom Kippur.
The civilian was hospitalized in life-threatening condition. The officer was listed as critical but stable. A synagogue leader said people “hit the floor” when the gunfire started. Police have not released a full public account of the exchange.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to attend Question Period in Ottawa this afternoon, then fly to New York for the Partners for Multilateralism Summit and United Nations meetings. Last week he addressed the European Parliament after Brussels floated making Canada the EU’s first “associate member,” a step U.S. President Donald Trump called a possible “hostile act.”
Ontario’s new rental rules also take effect today. Tariff-hit businesses say they are still waiting months for answers on federal support.
