THUNDER BAY / KENORA – September 21, 2026 – FedNor is putting $215,000 into three Northwestern Ontario projects meant to give young people skills and work, including $100,000 for the Northern Nishnawbe Education Council to buy production equipment for Thunder Bay’s Wake the Giant Festival.
Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu also announced funding for infrastructure projects in seven First Nations tied to critical-minerals development.
At the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, a Norval Morrisseau mural not shown publicly since 1986 is now on display. The Woodland-style work, about 6.7 metres long, is on loan from a Calgary studio until Jan. 3. Morrisseau, who died in 2007, was from Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation on Lake Nipigon.
The region is also watching a strengthening El Niño that forecasters say could bring a milder but more erratic winter, with freeze-thaw cycles and unstable ice. Frost advisories were in effect over the weekend in several inland districts.
