KYIV – August 5, 2026 – A large-scale Russian overnight barrage of ballistic missiles and drones has killed at least 17 people and wounded dozens more in Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian authorities said Wednesday.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles, four hypersonic missiles and 115 Shahed-type drones. Air defences intercepted most of the drones but none of the ballistic missiles.
Strikes hit residential buildings, warehouses and logistics facilities in several districts of the capital and nearby communities, sparking multiple fires. In the wider Kyiv region, 14 people were killed. One person died in the capital itself.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks deliberately targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure, and again urged Western allies to provide more air-defence systems, particularly Patriot interceptors capable of stopping ballistic missiles.
The assault continues a pattern of intensified Russian long-range strikes on Ukrainian cities this summer.
