Ignace, ON – August 7, 2026 – The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has released the final design for its Centre of Expertise, a $50-million facility planned for Ignace.
The approximately 55,000-square-foot building will serve as a hub for research, training, community engagement and public education related to Canada’s planned deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. It is expected to house 160 to 200 NWMO employees and open in 2028.
The design incorporates community input, including multipurpose and educational spaces that blend with the natural environment. NWMO officials say the centre will create long-term high-value jobs and attract visitors to northwestern Ontario.
“We are very proud of this design that integrates nature, knowledge and community,” said Christina Van Drunen, NWMO Vice-President of Operations.
