KYIV – August 21, 2026 – Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and surrounding areas on August 20 killed at least 16 people and injured more than 40, according to Ukrainian emergency services.
The overnight and daytime attacks damaged residential buildings, a school, a children’s hospital and warehouses. In the Solomianskyi district, a nine-storey apartment building caught fire after being hit. Rescue crews continued recovery operations into the following day.
Ukrainian air defences intercepted the majority of the incoming missiles, but several got through. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared August 21 a day of mourning in the capital.
The strikes came as Ukraine continued its own long-range drone campaign against Russian energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has again urged allies to accelerate deliveries of air-defence systems, particularly interceptors for ballistic missiles.
