BELLEVILLE / OTTAWA – September 23, 2026 – Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says the suspect in Sunday’s Yom Kippur shooting near a Belleville synagogue is dead. A police officer and a civilian were wounded in the exchange of gunfire. The civilian had been in life-threatening condition; the officer was listed as critical but stable.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is in New York this morning for an ocean-observing pledging event, then returns to Ottawa. He met world leaders during UN General Assembly week after last week’s speech to the European Parliament.
Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu said talks with India are making “great headway” and that a deal could come in the coming months as Ottawa looks beyond the United States. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said he was unsurprised after President Donald Trump indicated the U.S. will keep taking Canadian potash.
