KYIV – October 7, 2026 – A Russian strike destroyed a five-storey apartment building in Pryluky, in Chernihiv region, overnight. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service later put the dead there at 14, including three children, with about 50 injured, seven of them children. Rescue workers were still in the rubble Wednesday morning.
Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, the head of Ukrzaliznytsia, said one of the dead was a train driver, killed at home with his wife, their 8-year-old son and their 13-year-old daughter. He said the family had worked on the railway for generations, and that other railway workers’ homes were hit while those workers were on shift at the station.
Zelenskyy called it a birthday “gift” to Putin, who turns 74 today, and one of the most vile strikes of the war. He said Russia fired about 70 missiles and wanted the hit to be public. Two more people were killed in Dnipro, where five apartment buildings were damaged, and strikes hit high-rises in Kremenchuk. The air force said it shot down or suppressed 161 targets, including five ballistic missiles, 39 cruise missiles and 117 drones, among them North Korean KN-23s and Zircon and Onyx missiles. Ballistic missiles are the ones getting through. Moscow’s defence ministry said the strike was on military industry, including sites tied to Fire Point’s Flamingo missiles and drones, plus ports in Odesa region.
The energy ministry scheduled cuts in parts of the country. At least five regions were still without power Wednesday morning. Ukraine said it hit back in the same day and night: the Seshcha airfield in Bryansk region, two oil sites, a training ground, and a target in the Black Sea.
Pryluky is not on the front. It is a town on the railway north of Kyiv. The people under that building were asleep.
