KYIV – October 8, 2026 – The death toll in Pryluky rose to 22 by Thursday morning, including five children, after Wednesday’s missile strike on a five-storey apartment building in Chernihiv region. Ukraine’s emergency service said two more bodies were found after a strike on an apartment building in Kyiv, taking the capital’s count to four. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi had put the country-wide dead at 28 on Wednesday. Later counts ran past 30. About 100 people were injured.
Overnight into Thursday, Russia sent 142 drones, 82 of them jet-powered Shaheds, from Oryol, Kursk, Shatalovo, occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in Crimea. The air force said 126 were shot down or suppressed by 9:30 a.m. Strikes landed at seven sites. A drone hit a 12-storey building in Kyiv’s Desnianskyi district and started a fire. Four people were hurt, two of them children. Rescuers got 22 people out. The attack was still going Thursday morning.
Zelenskyy called Wednesday’s wave one of the most vile of the war and a birthday present Putin gave himself: “the killing of children, the killing of people.” He said Russia fired about 70 missiles, many of them ballistic. Moscow’s defence ministry said the strikes were on military industry, including sites tied to Fire Point, and on ports in Odesa region. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen called it a deliberate strategy of terror.
The railway family in Pryluky is part of that 22. The new fact on Thursday is the high-rise in Desnianskyi, and a drone wave that was mostly jet-powered and still got through in the capital.
