ENGLEHART – November 6, 2026
A serious two-vehicle collision closed Highway 11 in both directions between Highway 560 at Englehart and Highway 573 at Swastika on Thursday, and the Ontario Provincial Police later confirmed one person died at the scene.
The Temiskaming OPP announced the closure around noon Thursday, advising motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The stretch runs north from Englehart through the Kenogami area toward Swastika and Kirkland Lake. Ontario 511 listed the closure at Swan Lake Park Road West in Swastika at the northern end of the affected section. Community posts placed the crash more precisely between Track Road at Englehart and Layman Road West at Kenogami.
The highway reopened at 7:33 p.m. Thursday. In a follow-up notice, the OPP stated one person was pronounced deceased at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. No further details on the second vehicle, the people involved, or the cause have been released. The initial notice described only a serious two-vehicle collision and gave no injury information.
Highway 11 is the Trans-Canada corridor through northeastern Ontario and the only through route for communities between Temagami, Englehart, Kenogami, Swastika and Kirkland Lake. A full closure leaves no practical short detour for through traffic. Local roads serve farms and small settlements rather than absorbing Trans-Canada volumes, and drivers familiar with the area noted that suggested back roads are not suited to large or heavy vehicles.
Lengthy closures on northern highways typically reflect on-scene investigation requirements. OPP collision reconstruction involves documenting the roadway, measuring the scene and examining the vehicles before they are moved. That work cannot proceed around live traffic. The OPP has not stated what stage the investigation had reached by the time the highway reopened, whether weather or road conditions played a role, or whether charges are being considered. Those details usually appear in a later release.
The closure drew comment from Mushkegowuk–James Bay MPP Guy Bourgouin, who shared the notice with the line that northern Ontario deserves safer highways. Some commenters pushed back on weather-related framing, stating the collision occurred on dry pavement. The OPP has attributed the crash to no specific cause. What remains clear is the structural reality of the corridor: a single serious collision on a two-lane stretch of Highway 11 shuts the route completely, with no parallel highway available.
Drivers travelling through the Englehart and Kirkland Lake area should continue to check Ontario 511 for current conditions. The OPP has asked for patience during the investigation. Further updates on the people involved and the cause of the collision are expected once the reconstruction work is complete.
