OTTAWA – September 1, 2026 – Some Canadian users have begun seeing “Lake America” on Google Maps after the company updated labels for users in the United States following President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario.
The change has drawn criticism in Canada, where officials and residents have rejected the new name. Ontario Premier Doug Ford previously unveiled a “Lake Ontario Now and Always” sign, and some Ontario government and business websites have also displayed the U.S. label in error.
The renaming comes as Canada prepares dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on about $27 billion of U.S. goods, set to take effect September 8. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Ottawa will continue to defend Canadian industry. The Bank of Canada is expected to issue a rate decision this week amid the uncertainty.
