OTTAWA – August 31, 2026 – Google Maps has begun displaying “Lake America” for users in the United States after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week renaming Lake Ontario.
The change comes amid a deepening trade conflict between Canada and the United States. Ottawa is preparing dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on about $27 billion of U.S. goods, scheduled to take effect September 8.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has framed the standoff as a defence of Canadian industry and sovereignty. Ontario Premier Doug Ford previously unveiled a “Lake Ontario Now and Always” sign in response to the renaming effort.
Canadian markets have been relatively resilient so far, though trade-sensitive sectors such as auto parts have come under pressure. The Bank of Canada is scheduled to issue a rate decision this week as uncertainty over the trade war continues.
