WINONA / OTTAWA – August 30, 2026 – Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a “Lake Ontario Now and Always” sign in Winona on Saturday, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the lake “Lake America.”
The move comes amid a deepening trade conflict after talks between Canada and the United States collapsed last week. Canada has announced dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on $27 billion of U.S. goods, scheduled to take effect September 8.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has framed the standoff as a defence of Canadian sovereignty and industry. Local business groups in Northwestern Ontario say the tariffs are creating uncertainty, though the full impact on regional companies is not yet clear.
Trump has also threatened further duties on Canadian vehicles and auto parts. Ottawa is reviewing military procurement plans and considering greater cooperation with European and Asian partners as relations with Washington deteriorate.
