THUNDER BAY – September 4, 2026 – Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $4.7-billion investment Thursday to build and maintain Via Rail passenger cars at Alstom’s Thunder Bay plant and facilities in Quebec.
Carney said bringing passenger rail service back to Northwestern Ontario is a government priority. The work is expected to support manufacturing jobs in Thunder Bay, where Alstom already builds transit vehicles.
While in the city, the prime minister also toured a wildfire management centre and met with crew members. He later appeared with musician Bryan Adams at local landmarks.
The announcement comes as Ottawa looks to expand domestic manufacturing amid the trade dispute with the United States.
