OTTAWA – September 7, 2026 – Canadian counter-tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of U.S. products take effect Tuesday, after trade talks with Washington collapsed last month.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the measures in response to new American tariffs on a similar value of Canadian goods. Ottawa has said it will not rush back to the table without a deal that protects Canadian industry.
The deadline lands as other files compete for attention. In Nova Scotia, a 46-year-old Cape Breton woman was found dead in a flooded area after last weekend’s storm. Three counties had declared a state of emergency after more than 200 millimetres of rain washed out roads and cut power.
In Toronto, Live Nation Canada has been ordered to repair Rogers Stadium after a severe thunderstorm caused significant damage.
