KYIV – September 6, 2026 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Kyiv is counting on a U.S. “winter package” of air defence, energy support and American liquefied natural gas if Russia’s war continues into the cold months, after three rounds of talks with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
“If the war continues in the winter, we strongly count on the ‘winter package,’” Zelenskyy said, according to reporting from DW and bne IntelliNews. He said discussions covered Patriot systems and other weapons, energy infrastructure protection and “serious volumes” of U.S. LNG, with European partners also engaged.
National security advisers from Britain, France and Germany joined the final hour of the Kyiv talks. Zelenskyy said further meetings with the United States and the three European countries are planned, though no date or location has been set.
Zelenskyy described diplomacy as “Plan A” and military winter preparations as “Plan B.” He said about 67 Ukrainian companies are working on intercepting jet-powered attack drones, with a smaller number already showing results toward mass production. Territorial disputes, especially over Donbas, remain the core obstacle to a settlement.
