OTTAWA – October 11, 2026 – Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected in Alberta in the coming week, CBC News reported Sunday, with the province’s referendum eight days away.
Voters go to the polls on October 19. One question is whether Alberta should pursue separation from Canada. A yes would start the process toward a second, binding vote on leaving. Premier Danielle Smith has said she will not hold another referendum if the remain side wins, at least while she is premier. Some separatists have already pushed back on that.
Carney was in Fort McMurray on October 1 with Smith, when Ottawa designated the Pacific Link oil pipeline a project of national interest. That status shortens the federal approvals. The Wall Street Journal framed the designation as an attempt to keep Alberta in the country before the vote. Separatists have spent the summer pointing at federal energy and climate rules as the reason they want out. A pipeline announcement is the federal answer so far. A visit in the last week is the next one.
The same prime minister is also dealing with a Parti Québécois minority in Quebec, the first separatist government there in more than a decade. Alberta votes first. Carney’s office has not published the Alberta itinerary.
