KYIV – October 10, 2026 – President Donald Trump said Friday he had a “highly successful” call with Vladimir Putin and that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the American and global market, another 500,000 tonnes in November, and a million after that. A further three million tonnes, he wrote, would follow “within a short period,” depending on the state of Russian refineries.
Those refineries are the ones Ukraine has been hitting. Trump said the point was fuel prices, especially for farmers, ranchers and truckers. It is understood the U.S. Treasury is suspending sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7. Other frozen assets stay frozen. Putin later said Russia was willing to supply oil and products. He did not confirm the tonnage. Russia had banned diesel exports earlier this year.
Zelenskyy called it a gift Putin will repay with terror, and an investment in a war that should be ended, not prolonged. He told Axios it looked like a happy birthday present and was “absolutely terrible.” He asked for a strong conversation with Moscow, not a weak one.
The same day, Steve Witkoff said U.S., Ukrainian and European officials, including the E3, the European Commission and NATO, held talks in Miami on de-escalation before winter, energy, grain, security guarantees and reconstruction. A person familiar with the talks told Reuters the aim is a proposal in the coming weeks to take to Moscow. Putin had already told Trump that resuming talks with Ukraine was unlikely, citing drone strikes on Moscow during last month’s elections.
Diesel in one sentence, a Miami meeting in the next. The tonnes are what Trump put on Truth Social. The winter strikes are what is still landing.
