EDMONTON – October 13, 2026 – Prime Minister Mark Carney sat at a desk in St. Francis Xavier High School in west Edmonton on Thanksgiving morning and asked Albertans to stay.
“A week from today, Albertans will have the opportunity to make an important decision about their future,” he said. “Whether to remain part of Canada or begin a long and uncertain process through which Alberta could separate from Canada.” He grew up in Alberta. He went to school in that building. He said he is back often now because Ottawa is “building big things again in Alberta”: thousands of homes, high-speed rail, and the Pacific pipeline that was designated a project of national interest on October 1.
The October 19 vote is not binding. A yes on the separation question would start the process toward a second vote. Premier Danielle Smith has said she will not hold another if the remain side wins, at least while she is premier. Carney’s line was the usual one: “Canada is facing real threats – to our economy, to our security, to our way of life. We have to be strong and we are stronger together.” He closed with “It’s yours, it’s ours, and it’s worth fighting for.”
The message is on the Prime Minister’s Office site. The itinerary for the rest of the week in Alberta has not been published.
