KYIV – October 16, 2026 – The central Ukrainian region of Kirovohrad was hit by the largest Russian drone attack of the war on its territory overnight into Thursday. Governor Andriy Raikovych said more than 360 drones struck 26 locations. Three people were killed and six wounded. “The enemy deliberately hit critical infrastructure, transport enterprises, logistics facilities and residential homes,” he wrote on Telegram.
Ukraine’s Air Force counted 580 drones across the country that night, of which 536 were shot down or suppressed by 8 a.m. Zelenskyy put the national total higher in a later post, more than 850 drones, and said the barrage came “precisely at a time when the speed of our defensive capabilities is being artificially restricted.” He has said Starlink service was slowed and that early-warning data for ballistic missiles was cut. Three days of Ukrainian restraint on Russian refineries did not produce a reciprocal pause. On Thursday he told the Financial Times the pause was finished. “The block is out. We’re done.” A fire was reported at the Rosneft refinery in Ryazan the same morning.
In Kirovohrad the drones hit an enterprise and residential areas in Kropyvnytskyi. Emergency services posted photos of firefighters at the site. The region has not been a frequent target. Raikovych called the scale the largest of the war for his oblast. Zelenskyy said a Ukrainian missile destroyed six warplanes at an airfield in southwestern Russia that had been used to launch glide bombs. “Russia is dragging out the war, so our long-range operations will continue,” he wrote. The Russian Defence Ministry said it downed 166 Ukrainian drones overnight and hit two vessels carrying military cargo. Putin has said Ukrainian long-range attacks on refineries have caused “nothing particularly significant.”
The overnight count in Kirovohrad is one piece of a larger exchange. Ukraine paused refinery strikes for three days after Trump’s energy-ceasefire announcement. Russia did not pause. Ukraine resumed. Three people are dead in a region that does not usually take this volume of drones. The numbers differ by source and by the hour they were counted. The pattern does not. The governor’s figure of more than 360 drones for one oblast is the largest local claim of the night. The Air Force total of 580 is the national figure released at 8 a.m. Zelenskyy’s later post of more than 850 is a different count. All three can be true if they were taken at different times. The dead are not in dispute. Three people in Kirovohrad. Six wounded. The rest is the continuing exchange of long-range strikes.
